Friends of Felines Appeal - 25/2

The feral cats at UKZN campus have been provided for the last 15 years.  They are fed, trapped and neutered as far as possible but inevitably some escape being trapped and have kittens.

They have been provided for by a staff member, who takes sick and hurt cats home to be cared for.

Recently one colony was found to have feline Leukemia Virus. The disease caused by this virus is a form of cancer of the blood cells called lymphocytes (a leukemia). Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is one of the most feared causes of disease in cats, responsible for almost a third of their cancer deaths.

Some friends of the felines are thus trying to get together to sponsor the cats especially the kittens and young cats against this dreaded virus.

Any support would be hugely appreciated, we have over a 100 cats to vaccinate.

Animal Ambulance Appeal

Animal Ambulance runs an emergency shelter for sick and abused animals, who
without our help would die an often painful death.

We are pro-life, and after an animal has been rehabilitated, it is put up for adoption.
All animals are sterilized.

Our head office is in Valhalla (6 Bothma Street).

Established in 2002, we are a non-profit organisation which relies entirely on donations
and receives no funding from government.

Money received is used for veterinary bills, our Animal Ambulance home (we are trying
to buy a plot) and food. Please help us – every little bit is appreciated!

We are always happy to receive food (tinned or pellets), blankets, kennels, toys,
baskets, etc. Cash donations are tax deductible.

As much of our work is done in the townships, we often come across hungry pets, and
try to offer poor owners food for their dogs.

If you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause, you can make a secure
online credit card payment on our website (

Pitbull Rescue Needs Help

To all my fellow pit bull lovers and rescuers it is with great sadness that I have to tell you that it does not look like I can continue to rescue our beloved babies any longer we have put out multiple please for financial assistance for the pit bulls and have to date only managed to raise R850! I am completely out of personal funds for both my family and for the rescues and as we have had fantastic donations of food and treats we are not able to pay the costs of the sterilisations microchipping, vacs, kenneling and other medical expenses such as allergy medication, vitamins, etc. Over and above this we are wracking up excessive petrol and telephone costs in excess of R2000 each looking for homes and traveling to work with and find suitable homes for the babies. So please I ask one more time to please help us with the remaining 6 pit bulls we are caring for currently while awaiting their adoptions!

So please if anyone can help please the banking details are:

Chatterbox Appeal

Chatterbox was rescued from a Pet Shop cum breeder in March this year. He was being fed cat food, of the worst things that can be fed to a puppy.
Chattie, as he is affectionately called by all at Pug Rescue SA, is a little boy with huge attitude.  He has had to hold his own with the all the adults, and is often found at the centre of the group getting themselves into trouble.

About six weeks ago, it was discovered that Chattie had a second row of eyelashes on the inside of his lower lids, causing terrible irritation to his eyes, as if he was light sensitive.  The lashes were removed, and we thought he was well on the road to recovery, but on Saturday morning, Chattie was cavorting with three other youngsters, and ran into another Pug.

Upon examining his eyes, we noticed that his right eye was very red, and it did not improve with saline or medicated drops over twenty four hours. Cheryl took Chattie to our Pug Vet, Dr Coleman, at Rynfield Animal Hospital, on Sunday evening, and it was decided to operate immediately, to remove an ulcer from his right eye.  Chattie's running into the other puggie was not the cause of the ulcer, but certainly exacerbated it!

Chatterbox is back at Pug Rescue SA. The healing period will be quite uncomfortable for him.

The two operations have been a major setback to the funds available at Pug Rescue SA, especially since there will be no major fundraising until February 2012.  We appeal to everyone for assistance towards these rather large bills.

Please describe your payment simply as CHATTERBOX APPEAL, and EFT into the following bank account, as shown on the Pug Rescue SA website:

Derdepoort Project

DERDEPOORT PROJECT:  Most of you should be familiar by now with our Derdepoort Low Cost Housing sterilization project (for those who are not yet familiar with this project, please let me know so that I can send you our Sept/Oct ’11 newsletter).

We received an emergency call from the caretaker at the housing project on Saturday evening, informing us that a dog (Bokkie – little miniature pincher, refer photographs attached) was severely bitten by another dog (a Ridgeback X Boerboel).  She also informed us that another pooch (Shakira – refer photograph attached, Staffie X) has been ill for three days and that she may have food poisoning after eating rotten fish………

Both doggies could however only be rushed to the vet on Sunday morning, with the following diagnosis:

- Bokkie:  Bokkie’s wounds will be thoroughly cleaned and treated.  It was established that his front left leg got badly broken during the fight and needs urgent medical intervention.  During the consultation it was decided to first try and help Bokkie conservatively (wound and fracture), but the provisional quotation amounts to R1,000-00.  If the conservative method is not successful, Bokkie would need to be referred to a specialist for further medical care, in which case the eventual medical expenses will likely exceed R5,000-00.  The vet can produce the compulsory info if required (also refer comments below)
-  Shakira: It would at this point in time seem that Shakira definitely has food poisoning.  She stayed overnight at the vet for observation and received problem-solving treatment.

Bokkie’s unfortunate attack and subsequent injuries was brought about as an apparent direct consequence of another dog on heat and this could certainly have been prevented…  This is again a grim reminder to us all that this sterilisation project is SO important and crucial.  As you’ll notice on the attached photographs, the residents at the Derdepoort low cost housing project are truly fond of and taking good care of their pets, but do not have the financial means to pay for expensive veterinary care or to spay and neuter their animals.  We can all debate and argue the desirability for them to even have pets under these circumstances, but the reality is that we all love our animals irrespective of financial status.  They bring us joy, provide comfort, etc. and this is the same for every human being, no matter your financial situation, and the unconditional love we receive from our canine and feline companions is something that lets the sun shine brighter for every human being. As mentioned, these animals are otherwise well loved and cared for and we have a responsibility to help those who love their canine and feline companions dearly, but cannot afford expensive medical treatment.

Now for the part we always dislike to put forward……funding…  And believe me it’s not easy to ask… We need to raise funds to help Bokkie and Shakira and the funds which were so generously sponsored by private individuals for the Derdepoort sterilisation project are running low.  We subsequently need to make a plea and ask if you are able to make a donation towards Bokkie, Shakira (which is crucial) and / or the sterilisation project.  Funds can be paid directly into the vets account and he will provide the necessary invoices for the treatment, sterilisation, etc. if required.

Thanking you sincerely for your kind hearts on behalf of all the precious animals.  And remember, from Elephant to mice, they all leave paw prints in our hearts (some obviously bigger than others J) and they all depend on us to cherish the lasting impressions and example set by their unconditional love, only asking for a little love and affection in return.  Love is free, and our animal companions have buckets full to give, but unfortunately, their medical care require a small donation to fill this awful gap....

We all, unfortunately, know what the other alternative would be if funds aren’t raised to help Bokkie, Shakira and the other furry ones, and I personally would not be able to sleep at night knowing that I failed to aid in their plight... and this is also why I ask for your assistance...

Diepsloot Hit & Run Victim

We recently discovered this poor, badly injured boy in Diepsloot squatter camp.  We took him to our vet, Dr Shelagh Hahn, who confirmed that he must have been hit by a car, SEVERAL days before we finally found him!  Dr Hahn informed us that the right front leg was just too badly injured to try and save it and decided to amputate the leg. He was however, severely dehydrated, so she could not operate on him immediately.  He had to go on a drip for 24 hours before he was strong enough to undergo this major surgery.    Fortunately this very sweet puppy made it fine through the operation and is now on the road to recovery!  As soon as he has made a full recovery, he is going to need a very good home.  Please contact us if you can offer him a home.   We are in desperate need of funds for his medical bills, please help us by making a kind donation or supporting one of our various fundraising initiatives (see our website www.4ourpaws.org.za and below) and please forward this email to all your friends and family?  We also always need dog and cat food for all our shelter animals.  Thank you and kind regards, Merinda Brits

Ermelo Feral Cats

I urgently need help to raise funds to sterilise 26 feral kitties as soon as possible that have taken up residency at a workshop in the industrial part of Ermelo.  They are being fed by a lady called Chantelle who works at the workshop.  Chantelle even goes in over the weekends to feed the kitties.  The vets in Ermelo do not offer an affordable reduced sterilisation rate and there are no traps to be found anywhere. Tricha from Feral Squad has offered to go to Ermelo for a weekend in September with the assistance of Dr Vermooten to trap and sterilise as many of the kitties as possible at R250 per kitty plus petrol costs. Please help us keep the number down, by sponsoring a kitty or any amount that you can afford.  Kitten season has started and the number will double if we don’t sterilise them urgently.  Please forward this plea to everyone you know.
